Project Description

The Cross Border Angling Tourism Development Project  (CBATDP) was initiated in 2005, covering the border Counties of Leitrim and Fermanagh. This project is part financed by the European Union through the Interreg IIIA Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the Irish Central Border Area Network (ICBAN) Partnership worth €300,000. The CBATDP is an initiative of Leitrim County Council and is managed by a steering committee including representatives of the following agencies.

  • Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure Northern Ireland, Inland Fisheries Branch. (DCAL)

  • Fermanagh District Council/Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism (FLT)

  • The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board (ShRFB)

  • Central Fisheries Board (CFB)

  • Leitrim Tourism Ltd (LT)

The project was initiated in response to a reduction in visiting angler numbers to the project counties, with significant effect on the local economy. This drop in visiting angler numbers was associated with reports of declining fish stocks and reduced angling catch returns. The project set out to address these problems under the following aims.

  • to  investigate the status of fish stocks in the area and update existing data.

  • to promote Fermanagh and Leitrim as a first class angling destination.

  • to install new and develop existing angling facilities in the area

  • to identify new possibilities for angling development.
